Are Post Offices obsolete?

British Post Offices are having to adapt themselves to the changing market they occupy. Royal Mail is trying to become more efficient which means that Post Offices which cost more than they make have been put under scrutiny. The outcome is that many rural Post Offices have either closed or their service has been downgraded.

The Post Offices have been trying to offer more services such as banking, financial services and utilities to encourage customers to come in. They face an uphill battle. Emails and internet-based services are becoming easier to use and increasingly they fit into people's busy lives more easily than walking up to your local Post Office.

Businesses and governmental organisations are using email to communicate with their clients more so than before because it is cheap, measurable and easily personalised. Environmental issues also make using email more attractive than sending out printed materials.

BBC Lincolnshire's Rod Whiting was discussing this point on his show and our New Business Director, Will Hawkins, was asked to comment on whether we need Post Offices anymore. We recorded the section so you can listen to the discussion.
