3D isn't just for technical models, video games, or pre-rendered video sequences anymore. Real-time 3D has arrived on the desktop, on the web, and is steamrollering onto the Flash platform, taking it beyond two dimensions and into a third.
What does this mean for us – for you? Well honestly, 3D has been around in basic formats for years – this isn’t the first time its appeared. But every previous iteration of 3D has been basic or limited technically in some way. Making a picture look 3D is as simple – deforming it according to the principles of perspective. Add some creative thinking, some clever working, and you get more complex 3D ‘scenes’.
What is new is that the latest iteration of 3D engines available in Flash are more powerful, and are smarter. 3D objects can be taken from professional 3D modelling applications – the kind employed by big-budget film studios – and imported into the Flash player. It’s not quite ready to put any film studios out of business – but it’s a start!
We’ve a whole new dimension to explore – of course, you shouldn’t feel you have to use 3D because it’s available, but you shouldn’t discount your ideas because they’re too complex (or discount ours because you think they maybe too expensive). Flash is evolving fast, much that wasn’t feasible a couple of years ago is possible now, and could give your project the edge. Have a look at some of the examples below to see what is possible and then get hooked on the Red Bull flight racing.
